School Holidays During Term Time
Please note that the headteacher cannot authorise absence in term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Holidays are generally not considered an exceptional circumstance. [gov.uk], [commonslib…liament.uk]
- Any leave of absence must be authorised by the headteacher. Headteachers may only approve absences where they believe exceptional circumstances apply.
- If a child is taken out of school without authorisation, the absence is recorded as unauthorised and may lead to a penalty notice (fine). [gov.uk], [commonslib…liament.uk]
Current penalty notices (since August 2024)
For unauthorised absence that meets the national threshold:
- £80 per parent, per child if paid within 21 days.
- £160 per parent, per child if paid within 28 days.
- If unpaid, the local authority may consider prosecution. [commonslib…liament.uk]
When might leave be authorised?
Examples that may be considered include:
- Funerals
- Significant family emergencies
- Other genuinely exceptional circumstances
A cheaper holiday, work commitments, needing a quieter holiday or family vacation is not normally regarded as exceptional. [gov.uk], [commonslib…liament.uk]
