A selection of girls from Year 5 and 6 went to Net Park (near Sedgefield) to take part in science experiments and investigation. The day was organised by STEM and was used to promote and encourage girls taking part in science.
Harvest Festival and Visiting the Foodbank
We celebrated Harvest Festival in school with Year 2 performing in front of the school and parents. They rein-acted ‘The Little Red Hen’ and did a great job!
All the food that was donated was then taken to the Foodbank in Durham.
Durham Farmers’ Market 2016
A selection of children from the school took part in a Farmers’ Market Project in the summer term. The main purpose was to look at the Soil Association’s Food for Life project, learning about recipes and food preparation techniques which would have been popular 100 years ago, during the Great War. The six month project has involved visits to Beamish Museum and Broom House Farm. The pupils then opened their stall in Durham and sold the produce based on what they have learned to visitors to the market.

We do not have any current vacancies.
Mini Beast Hotel
We have created a mini beast hotel in the playground near the Year 1 classroom. We hope that lots of mini beasts come to stay and even recommend it to their friends!
Teaching Writing Presentation
A message from Abigail and Megan in Year 6…
Dear Parent/Carer,
We would like to invite you to an evening in school to discuss how we teach writing. We will consider how we help children become better writers and develop techniques that they can use in class. We will also take the opportunity to discuss how you can help your children at home.
Please join us on Monday the 29th February at 4:30pm.
School Lumiere Festival 2016
All of the classes are preparing for a whole school Lumiere Festival that will be taking place on Wednesday 10th February 2016 from 6pm until 7pm. Everyone is invited to come and look at this light spectacle and celebrate the children’s work. More pictures will follow after the event has taken place. Keep an eye out for the latest news on the Newsletters each week…
A great turn out of parents, carers, children and staff made the night a huge success. The school was lit up with displays from each class and we also had a fire show. Even though the night was freezing (the hot chocolate helped!) everyone seemed to have a brilliant time. Here are some pictures from the night.
Top 100 Schools for progress
We have been rewarded for all our hard work and commitment to giving our children the best start in their education. West Cornforth Primary School is placed in the top 100 schools in the country for pupil’s progress and we have received a letter from the schools minister, Nick Gibb, confirming it! This is a fantastic achievement for all of the staff and children at the school and we are extremely proud! Well done!
Anti-Bullying Week 2015
This year the theme for ‘Anti-bullying Week’ was:
In school we split the classes into family groups and worked together to understand what bullying is and what we can do if it happens to us or someone we know. The pupils showed that there is nothing good or positive that comes from bullying.
Gymnastics Festival 2015
From Reception to Year 6, all classes took part in our intra-school gymnastics festival. All of the classes prepared a routine and performed it in front of each other. We have some excellent gymnasts of the future in our school!
After every class had performed, they were sent back to their classrooms to vote for their favourite. The winning class, who will go to a Gymnastics Festival in Spennymoor, was Year 6. Well done everyone!
